ABOUT GUMCH

Government Unani Medical College came into existence from September 1975. It is the off shoot of the historical, All India Tibbi conference of 1973 hosted in Glass House at Lalbagh in the garden city of Bangalore, while inauguration our beloved leader the prime minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi enunciated the opening of the same from the next academic year. Dr. Melkote had some concrete recommendations in its formulation. The prime among them is to create competent integrated doctors well versed in Unani as well as equally aware with latest trends in service to mankind.

The growing demand of Unani medicine in the state influenced the think tanks to start the college of Unani medicine at the earliest paving the way for the permanent solution and when the idea was transformed into reality, GUMC, Bangalore got started in the year 1975.

The nomenclature of the course was BMBS and 15 students were admitted for the academic year 1975-76. Late Shri M. Siddaveerappa, the minister for Health & Municipal administration and Late Shri D. Devaraj Urs, minister inaugurated the college & Late Shri Azeez Sait sahib, the Minister for transport presided over the function. The sympathetic attitude of the minister of higher education, Late Shri S.M. Yahya could affiliate the college under the umbrella of Bangalore University.

For six years the college was housed in an old building in SJIIM till it was demolished for the directorate of ISM & H to come up. Initially the college had only four teachers namely Late Dr. MMH Bazmi, Dr. Syed Shaji Hyder, Dr. Syed Sibgathulla and Dr. C. M. Haroon respectively to teach the 1st Year subjects. Later Dr. Syed Shahbul Haq from Mysore was deputed to this institute.

In the year 1977, the central council of Indian medicine revamped the syllabus on national level and implemented uniform nomenclature of degree in Unani throughout as BUMS shelving the prior one and then Minister of Health and Family Planning Government of Karnataka Shri. Morgada Mallappa renamed this college from Government Unani College to Government Unani Medical College to make public more clear to understand. In this regards a Government order was also issued.

The period of Shri A. K. Abdul Samad as Minister of Health and Family Planning Goverment of Karnataka was a golden period for Unani in recent post; in his period, a high power ‘Razaq Committee’ was appointed officially to probe into problems of Unani in the state and to suggest appropriate measures in remedying them. In this tenure more vacancies in the college were created. More teachers of Allopathic Medicine on part time basis were appointed to groom up the students in the subjects of modern medicine for the first time Indian Medicines (Unani & Ayurveda) were posted in allopathic hospitals for practical training and after the course these internees were posted to work in all major allopathic hospitals. In this golden period only the graduates of first batch were given jobs in Government service boosting their morale high.

During this period itself the prestigious National Institute of Unani Medicine was allotted to Bangalore with a view of bright future for Karnataka Unani graduates and so on.

In 1989, the land for construction of GUMC, Bangalore was allotted in Magadi Road, Basaveshwarnagar, Bangalore. In the year 1996 the construction of GUMC, Bangalore was started. In the year 2004 the college was shifted from Mysore road to Basaveshwarnagar. The building was inaugurated by Dr A.B. Malaka Reddy on 10th 0f February 2004. Later GUMC hospital land was allotted just opposite to GUMC, basaveshwarnagar, Bangalore. The 100 bedded GUMC& H was inaugurated on 5th June 2017 by Shri Ramesh Kumar, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family welfare, Government of Karnataka.
